Please read all this carefully as it's kind of confusing. I have been using Solus 4.7 KDE since the first of the year on an old HP laptop and have been very pleased with it.
I decided to try a new install on an older Asus desktop that has an Nvidia card in it. Since I am aware that Nvidia and Linux don't always play nice together I thought i would first try Solus as a dual boot with MXLinux on that machine. It booted fine from the USB with out using the Nvidia compatibility option. The USB has Ventoy and several ISOs on it.
The dual boot install went fine and when restarted everything worked fine with normal resolution. So I thought Solus and Nvida were going to work well together.
Next I removed the SSD which was only a half gig and replaced it with a new 1 gig SSD. Then I tried to install Solus on the new SSD. When I selected Solus without Nvidia compatiblity like before at about the time I should see a cursor show up my monitor says no signal. I waited for quite a while and never got a signal back to my monitor. That's confusing to me because before it booted fine like that.
So next I tried booting Solus using the Nvidia compatibility mode. This time it did boot up but the resolution was way too low causing most to the desktop to be off the screen. And it also asked for a password which It didn't before. Since I didn't know the password I shut it down.
I next tried an older version of Solus which was 4.4 Mate that was on the Ventoy stick. That version booted up fine with normal resolution.
I have read somewhere that sometimes when you use a USB stick to install a program things can get written back to the USB stick that prevent it from rebooting properly. So I replaced the Solus 4.7 KDE with a new copy and tried again. No change.
I also tried to install Solus Budgie. It did the same thing with no signal if I didn't choose Nvidia compatibilty. When I chose the compatibily option it also booted with the resolution at 640 x 480 so the desktop was mostly off the screen. I did try to install it but it said my screen was too small.
Doing some searching on this forum I did learn that the password should be "root" but I haven't tried that yet because I think will probably get the same message I got when trying to install Budgie that my screen is too small.
What really has me confused is why did Solus 4.7 KDE install just fine on the same machine as a dual boot but won't install after I replaced the SSD with a new one?
If anyone can tell me how to get past this problem I would really appreciate it because I am really liking Solus.
