I did a re-install a month or so ago. Budgie. Nvidia 1050. I kept the graphics setting like they were. This week after some updates I ended up with a black screen, with a cursor and a few icons on the taskbar, that didn't do anything when pressed.
I did a re-install yesterday, and after some updates ended up with a black screen with just the cursor when I booted up this morning. Again: No tampering with settings.

What is going on and what can I do about it?
The re-install a month ago I had to do after Solus stopped working (other update?) and I am beginning to question the stability of Solus. Time for a new distro?

  • AlphaElwedritsch and Staudey replied to this.
  • Staudey I didn't install any nvidia drivers, as they gave me issues at first after installing the KDE version a month ago.

At this moment I have it running again.
I installed the nvidia driver from commandline:
    sudo eopkg it nvidia-470-glx-driver-current

Still curious why it went black all over sudden.

Archdevil and I am beginning to question the stability of Solus.

There is no reason to question the stability of Solus if the majority of users do not notice any instability

Archdevil Time for a new distro?

    Nobody can stop you.
It's always the same question: how quickly do you give up? How interested are you in finding the error? ....

I would like to see someone give advise here on this forum. But I don't have lots of time as I need my main computer to work... And my experience with the distro the last few months just hasn't been so great. I ran it a few years without issues, but lately I keep having problems.

Does that mean you did or didn't install the proprietary NVIDIA drivers? If you did, what method did you use to do so?

So did you install ALL updates, or just some?

reboot reboot reboot especially toggling back and forth between nvidia and nouveau.

That's not the correct driver for your card. I mean, it works, but it's way old and only there to support previous GPU generations (also it's already unsupported by NVIDIA and will be removed as soon as it no longer works correctly with new kernels). Not sure why you chose that one in particular. I recommended just using the "Hardware Drivers" utility to choose the correct one.

edit: Additionally I've recently also had an issue with the 470 driver not booting that I haven't figured out yet, so it's doubly troublesome.

Perhaps a newer/different computer would solve your problems? If another distro works better with your current equipment, then the solutions to your problem are pretty clear. You either need to change your equipment or change your distro. Hopefully one or the other will make you happy.

I just wanted to inform you that I switched to Linux Mint 8 weeks ago. Works like a charm on my setup. I have had much fun with Solus for quite a number of years, but lately it didn't work anymore. It feels like the support for building the distro is not as good as it was in the beginning. I wish you all here and everyone at the Solus endeavour all the best. I do not presume I will be back in the forseeable future.

I wish you the best too with Linux Mint 🙂. My advice is always the same, use the distro and/or desktop environment which works best for you, and gives you the less headaches, especially if you use it for work.
