  • Nvidia Optimus or Intel integrated GPU not selectable within BIOS

Hi there!

I am using SOLUS Budgie, latest current kernel, on a Lenovo Thinkpad W530.
It has two GPUs, one Nvidia Quadro K1000M, one Intel integrated chip.

As we SOLUS users cannot choose from the Nvidia X Server settings which GPU we would like to use I've tried to choose the Intel chip within the BIOS settings.
I have the choice of

  • integrated graphics
  • dedicated graphics
  • [...?]
I can also choose between detecting Optimus enabled/disabled.

No matter which combination of options I select - I can only use Optimus enabled & dedicated graphics.
With all other combinations of settings the boot process gets stuck at the famous black screen with the even more famous blinking cursor.

Any ideas what I can do?
I don't mind using the Nvidia GPU but if one has a choice and if it saves battery (which it should) one would at least try the integrated GPU, wouldn't one?

So, any ideas, folks?

Have you installed the Nvidia graphics driver?

Yes, I run DoFlicky, let it search for drivers, there are no drivers to be installed other than the 32bit ones which I don't need.

And of course the drivers are installed or I wouldn't be able to use the Nvidia GPU, would I?

Not sure how helping people is "spammy". Those threads were the exact threads I came across when trying to solve this problem. It would be reasonable to assume others would, too.

Whatever. Last post. Done.

P.S. You wonder why you guys have a reputation for being unhelpful and not listening to your community? This is a prime example. You won't see me on the forum anymore.

kz6fittycent Sorry if that came off as a bit strong. You went and posted the same link, for your own stuff, several times in the span of an hour on different posts. Not trying to be unhelpful or ignorant, just asking that you please not necro old posts like that and dial it back a bit on the self-promotion. I appreciate what you are trying to do and I thank you for taking the time to do it, but I have to hold you to the same standard I would any other user. If anyone else did the same thing, regardless of their motivation, I would have responded the same way.

kz6fittycent I'm sorry if i'm ruining this thread with a reply incoherent with the original post, but:
Why don't you create an Off-Topic (how do i linux) thread where to explain how useful this script is?
It poped up in different support threads and it could help many users.

DudeG Why don't you create an Off-Topic (how do i linux) thread where to explain how useful this script is?

One was created after Bryan kindly requested he stop posting it across multiple different threads, so I removed it as per our Community Guideline rule which states "The continual repetition and/or advertisement of any products, services, or projects is not permitted." I'm simply being consistent with the enforcement of our Community Guidelines, which all members of our community adhere to by using our services or services utilized by us.

Furthermore, having a dedicated thread when there are already multiple related to optimus is entirely unnecessary.

First time I've ever heard that. What Solus IS known for and DOES have a reputation for is being built from scratch. It's being a VERY stable curated rolling release. It IS known for helping people on the forums, through the help center, as well as on IRC chat. I've been a personal testament to this, and have been helped countless times over the past two years by Solus devs, by global maintainers, and even by average Solus users because people are happy to help and offer their assistance. Sorry to say, but you must have Solus confused with something else.
