View image in terminal

How can I view an image in the terminal without opening any gui? I've seen tiv but it's not in the repositories?

Antoine In short, you need a terminal that has either Sixel or Kitty Graphics Protocol support.

In Kitty you can display an image with the command: kitten icat <image>

An image viewer that should work in any terminal regardless of support is Chafa. It's not in the repos but there's a standalone download on the website.

Short of viewing imagines inline in the terminal, there are some tools that only open a minimal window, like feh and display (from imagemagick)

Apparently the ranger CLI file manager can also preview images in the terminal, but I couldn't quite get that to work
