Waydroid on Solus

How would you set this up? I think it's possible but I honestly don't know. It's not available via eopkg sadly.

Waydroid is open source. The problem that I am aware of packaging it for Solus is that it depends on out-of-tree kernel module (namely ashmem and binder). There is historic reason of not including the modules which I am not sure what it is. It looks like a pain to package and nobody is stepping up to maintain all of this. If you want to try this on Solus, unfortunately you have to start from scratch by compiling the kernel module yourself, then compiling waydroid itself. You might find the guide on their website. honestly, if i get better hardware and the know-how to compile it and package it into its own thing, i'll probably try to maintain it myself considering this is one of the roadblocks for me switching to solus as a daily driver if i want to do so.

Out of the box idea, but can you just use scrcpy and mirror your device? I do that with games like marvel strike force and it works fine.

zmaint Thank you for mentioning scrcpy. Wasn't aware of it. It is a nice way to access your phone's apps on your computer. Pro: not much configuring needed. Con: you need your phone around.

I was interested, too, so I installed it. But neither the GUI nor the terminal version would start. Any help with this?

What do I need to install in order to make scrcpy work? I'm currently using KDEConnect for this task, and I'm curious. Is scrcpy perhaps usable only by GNOME-based systems?

WetGeek I use KDE (no wayland) and scrcpy works.

Works fine on Budgie, but it might be an issue with Wayland. You'll also need to set up TCP/IP (Wireless) as noted in the documents - https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy/blob/master/doc/connection.md#tcpip-wireless
I used the "Manual" method connecting via USB first, then connecting the device via adb wirelessly, then running scrcpy.
EDIT: Also the phones I used are on Android 13 and Android 15.

Thanks. I DO use Wayland, and have no plans to go back to X11.

What I'd like to know is, what's the difference bertween scrcpy and KDE Connect? Seems like I don't need scrcpy at all. KDE Connect allows my Solus laptop and my Andoid smartphone to communicate easily.

WetGeek scrcpy is used to see and use the Android screen on the Linux desktop, Remmina style, for example since I use an e-ink tablet, sometimes I want to preview the colors of my notes and I use it.
I also use localsend which in my opinion is more practical than kdeconnect for transferring files between devices.
(sorry for my poor english and all that "to use"... 😛 )

Hello! I'm back after a while, haven't used Solus in a long time but got interested again.
I'm happy to see that @alfisya showed that it was committed recently!
The main thing that I've seen is that there is no alternative kernel, but if the binder modules are provided via the package then it's likely possible now.

I'll check for myself relatively soon, I appreciate all the discussion here <3

ajd07 the upstream kernel changed what was needed to make it run, and the new module is built with the correct settings out of the box. You should just be able to install Waydroid and have it run correctly without any additional configuration.
