Hey Everyone,
I'm trying to get AC3 passthrough for 5.1 surround via HDMI or SPDIF, and I want it to be system-wide, not just for movie playback but also for games.
I've found some guides online about using Pipewire to send encoded AC3 out of VLC or mpv, but I couldn't get them to work. Even if I managed to get it working for a video player, that wouldn't solve the issue for other applications. Older guides suggest replacing PulseAudio with ALSA. Interestingly, my SBC media box running CoreElec uses ALSA audio, and surround sound works fine there.
That would be fantastic if there's a good way to get Pipewire to work. But if not, what's the proper way to replace it with ALSA? And if that experiment doesn’t work out, how can I revert back to Pipewire to ensure I still have functional sound? I’m running Budgie on an LTS kernel.
