Could someone explain the issue with the tray icons of the gtk app to me please? I think it was since version 10.8 that all tray icons for gtk apps disappeared. Is this a bug or error on my end?

User_007 Sounds like it would have to do with the Status Notifier-based tray. See the "System Tray Adopts Status Notifier Specification" section in the 10.8 blog post: https://buddiesofbudgie.org/blog/budgie-10.8-released

It certainly shouldn't mean that no GTK apps have tray icons anymore though. Maybe you have just an unfortunate collection of incompatible apps (which happen to be GTK-based)

Thanks for your reply. Audacious, Deadbeef, Hexchat, uGet, Rhythmbox show no tray icon. On my Fedora 39 test vm uGet does... strange.

will fractional scaling be on the roadmap for Budgie?

I'm sure there are quite a few users of Solus Budgie on 4k screens who will appreciate the flexibility that fractional scaling has to offer, but does not wish to change DE to Plasma.

I don't keep a close eye on Budgie development so I could be way off, but given Budgie uses magpie which is a soft fork of mutter which does not support fractional scaling on X11 only supporting it on Wayland. I don't think it will be coming soon, but I am sure it is something they will have one day.

Fractional scaling is indeed something we want to have for Budgie 11, but that's a good ways off.

As to why some applications show tray icons on some ither distros: some distros (especially Ubuntu) patch their packages to use the more updated AppIndicator library. Unfortunately, those usually don't get upstreamed, making it harder for the rest of us to deal with it.
