Brother hll2390dw Not Recognized.

I thought I had this issue resolved earlier but I was wrong. It is still not recognized. I have tried all the suggestions I can find going back to 2019 for multiple Brother printers to no avail. I am on Gnome now but experience the same thing on Budgie. Can anyone help me? So before I file a bug I wanted to see if anyone has found a way to resolve the "brother bug?"

I have installed many distros and this printer is always recognized and works every time.

I ran dmesg and came up with the following. I don't know what is means or does but someone else earlier ran it.

Dutchmaster You mean you installed this package brother-hll2390dw and is still not recognized?

Correct. Either that driver or brlaser work universally. I tried both.

Make sure you are adding the printer after the driver is installed, otherwise the printer will be added with a generic driver.

Remove the printer in printer settings
install the driver: sudo eopkg install brother-hll2390dw
Add the printer back in printer settings

That was suggested in the past. I've tried it to no avail.

Dutchmaster like they said above, sequence is everything. tear out the existing printer and every single brother folder then start again.
reboot, reboot, reboot is key.
test page first.
I have the HLL2315 DWdriver package, it's fine.

Plan B I've done in distros without my 2315 package: manually add printer and add a printer driver--in your case an HLL directly above or directly below yours. It's call the great fake-out and I've pulled it off a time or two.

EDITED for Irony: in endeavour I have to fake out my 2315 with your 2390 and it works. (re: manual method explained above).

Well, the 2360dw driver was recognized and I thought I was good to go, but it got stuck "processing" when I tired to attempt to print. So I removed the printer again and went back to the starting spot. This time it was not recognized.

I get it about rebooting. I know that and have done that repeatedly throughout this process.

I guess I've been lucky that I've never had any trouble with this printer until now.

With all the digging and trying and failing I've done in this situation, I think this meets my criteria for a bug. So I filed a bug report.

I hope some easily repeatable Brother solution comes along. I love this distro and want to make it my home.

Dutchmaster yeah if you have the 2390 then the 2390 repo package should work. there were updates to my 2315 recently so maybe all? Filing bug report the right thing to do. Good luck.
In the meantime play with the 2360 etc
plan c: there are other brother printer drivers bundled in repo I wonder if by some lark...

brlaser is the standard bundled open source driver. It doesn't work either.

I run budgie. I'm playing with the new XFCE on another HDD. Your post reminded me to try installing my printer tonight. So I did.

Install solus repo 2315 drivers in XFCE.
Rebooted.
Ignored login to XFCE and watched the last quarter of the Buffalo. What a heroic drive for Buffalo in the middle of that quarter.
Logged in.
Found XFCE Add Print thingy. First time I saw it. Hit add printer. it looked for driver. apparently found them in house. I selected my printer and immediately print test page popped up.
So test page printed fine. The end.
Solus saw the printer model after install and reboot then I selected printer model in print dialogue box, then XFCE print dialogue married the unit to the drivers and tested page.
I selected the printer solus saw. Also in print dialogue was crap like cups, lpr driver, some other stuff. Didn't touch them.
XFCE saw and used the HLL2315.PPD and it worked.

Your HLL2390.PPD driver did not work for your 2390 model which was weird. I hope they get to the bottom of it.

Also significant if the package maintainers are reading this and looking for clues...my model is hll2315dw. solus driver is called hll2315dw. budgie sees my model as hll2315dw..but XFCE recognizes my printer as HLL2315D...without the W. But printer and driver work.
(that's probably a case of reading metadata.)

plan D: I've also in other distros I've taken the linux Brother targz (speciic to model) and install it according to archaic maddening brother instructions at the website which is basically cd then install sh then guess corectly to its questions during install...success not guaranteed here. luck.
look forward to what Solus tells you about your 2390 package. hopefully they'll prioritize it--depending on fires being put out--and ask you for some output of debug assistance.
hang in there with solus. this will be solved.
